The Gallery of Giants
Iconic Spans of West Virginia
Explore the stories, architectural profiles, and historic significance of the mountain state's legendary bridge spans.
Wheeling Suspension Bridge
Wheeling, WV (Ohio River)
Designed by Charles Ellet Jr., this was the longest suspension bridge in the world when built. It stands as a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark and is the oldest vehicular suspension bridge in the United States still in use.
"It was a critical link for the National Road, opening up the western frontier of the United States."
New River Gorge Bridge
Fayetteville, WV (New River)
An engineering masterpiece of the late 20th century. For decades, it held the title of the world's longest single-span steel arch bridge. It stands 876 feet above the rushing waters of the New River, making it one of the highest bridges in the Americas.
"Every October, West Virginia celebrates 'Bridge Day', the only day of the year pedestrians are legally allowed on the span."
Philippi Covered Bridge
Philippi, WV (Tygart Valley River)
Designed by Lemuel Chenoweth, this historic wooden structure is the oldest and longest double-barrel covered bridge in the United States. It played a highly strategic role during the American Civil War, used by both Union and Confederate forces.
"It survived a severe fire in 1989 and was meticulously restored to its original historic specifications using traditional 19th-century timber techniques."
Silver Bridge (The Legacy of Safety)
Point Pleasant, WV (Ohio River)
A crucial historical exhibit. The tragic collapse of the Silver Bridge in 1967 due to a single eyebar defect revolutionized national bridge engineering. It led to the creation of the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS) that protect millions of lives today.
"The legacy exhibit at BridgesWV honors the victims and educates visitors on the evolution of structural metallurgy and safety inspection tech."

The Forge of Innovation
A hands-on engineering lab where guests of all ages can build their own physical model bridges and test their load-bearing capacity against simulated forces.
The Ellet & Roebling Archives
A climate-controlled vault displaying rare 19th-century engineering blueprints, hand-drawn schematics, and personal journals of legendary bridge pioneers.
The Wind & Water Simulator
An immersive wind-tunnel theater showing how aerodynamics, water currents, and thermal expansion affect bridge stability in real-time.
Inspiring the Next Generation of Engineers
The State Museum of Bridges is dedicated to fostering regional interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). We are partnering with West Virginia schools and universities to host over 15,000 students annually for free hands-on engineering field trips.
